New Password Requirements
- Cannot match any of the 20 previous passwords
- Must be at least 8 characters long (although longer is better)
- Must not contain a large portion of the username
- Must contain characters from 3 of the 4 following categories:
- Uppercase Letters (A-Z)
- Lowercase Letters (a-z)
- Digits (0-9)
- Symbols (#$%^&*,etc)
Do not re-use a password you use somewhere else; if that service is hacked, your re-used password will be compromised and hackers can use that to access your AC account.
Changing Your Password
Windows PC Password Reset – On college-owned Windows PCs, you can change your password by logging in, pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE, and selecting Change Password from the menu.
Self Service Password Reset – Click to the self-service password system then Change Password to change your password. If you pre-register your account using the User Registration account, you can recover your password using answers to previously answered security questions.
Web Mail Password Reset – log into Web Mail. In the top right of the page, next to your name, click on the gear icon, then select Change Password from the menu.
Account Locked after Password Entry Mistakes
If the password for an account is entered incorrectly 5 times in 5 minutes, that account is locked for 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes has expired, the account is unlocked and can be logged into. This helps prevent an automated ‘brute force attack’ on your account using a list of specific or random passwords.
Responsibility for Your Password
Passwords for individual accounts are the responsibility of the account owner. Passwords should be protected and not shared with anyone or stored in a way where others can easily access.
